My state agency is having difficulty with my case because the non-custodial parent lives in another state.
There could be many reasons why your state agency is having difficulty with your case if the non-custodial parent lives in another state. The enforcement officials may not be able to serve notice on the non-custodial parent due to inadequate address information. There’s also the possibility that it’s taking a while to get a court date if a hearing is necessary.

Also, keep in mind that enforcement agencies in other states have a very high demand for their services as well. A state's ability to act rapidly depends on the characteristics of the case, the quality of information received, and the amount of staff and other resources they have to devote to it.

If after speaking with your caseworker you’re still not satisfied with the way your case is being handled, you can hire an attorney or initiate legal self-help

To determine which option will work best for you, you must take a few things into consideration.
  • The amount of child support owed to you
  • The amount of time and money you’re willing to spend on the enforcement of your child support order. Some options require more of your direct involvement than others will and some options will cost you more than other.
  • The option most likely to give you a reasonable return on your investment. It’s a basic business rule of thumb: You should not risk a lot of money in order to get relatively little back in return.
